Fr. Austriaco earned his Ph.D. in Biology at M.I.T. and his License in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. The video is taken from a symposium entitled, “Stem Cells: Science, Ethics and Politics at the Crossroads,” held on October 2, 2004. His talk in defense of the dignity of the human embryo was given to oppose Proposition 71, a ballot measure in California that sought to fund destructive human embryo research. It was hosted by The Science Network, a national cable channel, and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, CA Fr. Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco, O.P., is an Assistant Professor of Biology and an Instructor of Theology at Providence College in Providence, R.I. He also serves as an Investigator of the NIH-Rhode Island IDEA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Program, a staff ethicist at the Dominican Friars Health Care Ministry of New York, and a consultant for the Committee on Science and Human Values of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Fr. Nicanor is the first speaker in the video. He speaks for about thirteens minutes and contributes to the panel discussion at the end.
