15 New Novices
August 8th, 2007 by Br. Pius, OP
On the feast of our Holy Father St. Dominic, 15 men received the habit of St. Dominic and entered the novitiate of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph. The novitiate is located at St. Gertrude Priory in Cincinnati, OH. The purpose of the novitiate is to introduce individuals interested in religious life to the life of the Order. These men will live out “the regular life” under the guidance of a Novice Master, who will instruct them in the life of the Order, its history, and the three traditional religious vows (poverty, chastity, and obedience). At the end of this one-year period of discernment, the men petition to take their first vows usually for a period of 3 1/2 years. Upon the Order’s approval, they will make simple vows on August 15 and then move to the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC for further studies and formation.
Below are the names of the new novices. Some have chosen religious names which is optional upon entering the novitiate. Of the 15 men, two are entering as cooperator brothers (see brother) and 13 are entering as clerical brothers (see priest).

The 15 men are:
First Row (L-R): Br. Bartolome de las Casas Sweeney, Br. Michael Lynch, Br. Paul Kennedy, Br. Charles Shonk, Br. Joseph-Mary Hertzog.
