More on the Dominican Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War
October 30th, 2007 by Br. Pius, OP

**UPDATED**
Of the 497 martrys of the Spanish Civil War beatified on 28 October 2007, at least 74 were associated with the Order of Preachers, mostly friars. (Although the group also included the first Dominican Cloistered Nun to be martyred, Bl. Josefina Sauleda Paulis, OP.) Below are the names of all the Dominican martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.
In addition, immediately below are the stories of one of the recently beatified Dominican Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. He is significant for us because he also spent time in the United States, at the Spanish Dominican College in Rosaryville, LA, near near Ponchatoula, LA.
Bl. Pedro Ibañez Alonso, O.P.
Fr. Ibañez Alonso was born on April 27, 1892 in Fuentes de Nava, Palencia (Spain). He joined the Dominicans in Avila and made simple profession on September 5, 1909. He moved to the U.S. in October of 1914 to complete his theological formation at the Spanish Dominican College in Rosaryville, Louisiana. He made solemn profession at Rosaryville on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1915. He left Rosaryville and arrived in the Philippines in July of 1916. There he was ordained to the priesthood. He spent time as a missionary in China and then returned to Spain in 1934. He was forced to flee the Convent of the Rosary in Madrid after communists came looking for him and others in order to kill them. For a while, he lived in hiding in a hostel near the convent until he was caught by the communists. He was killed on August 27, 1936 after being brutally beaten by his captors.
We thank God for the example of these courageous martyrs to the faith. May they continue to intercede for the Order of Preachers, beseeching God to give us the strength to persevere in our vocation of preaching for the salvation of souls.
In addition, the following is the story of another Dominican Martyr of the Spanish Civil War. However, his cause for beatification is still pending:
José Mira Lloret, O.P.
Fr. Mira Lloret was born in Alcoy, Alicante (Spain) on March 6, 1872. He completed his novitiate and philosophical studies in the Dominican Convent of Ocaña. He subsequently finished two years of Theology in Avila, where he was organist and distinguished himself for his musical abilities. He spent some time in Rosaryville, Louisiana at the Spanish Dominican College and then left for Manila, Philippines in 1912. He was elected Socius to the Prior Provincial in 1926 and was appointed chaplain of nuns of the Convent of St. Rita in Pampanga, Philippines. After four years, he returned to Spain. He ended up in Ocaña once again. When the Communist revolt broke out, however, he decided to go back to Alcoy, where he was born. On August 11, 1936, trying to make his way to Alcoy, his train was stopped and searched by Communist troops at Aranjuez. Fr. Mira Lloret was identified as a priest and a religious; and hence he was forced out of the train, taken to a nearby bridge and hurled headlong to the river Tajo below. He died instantly.
The foregoing excerpts were translated and adapted by Rev. Br. John Martin Ruiz Mayorga, O.P., from the book: Mártires Dominicos de la Cruzada Española, by Luis A. Getino, O.P. and Felipe M. Castro, O.P. (Salamanca: Avelino Ortega, 1950).
