Christian Churches Celebrate Holy Week
By: Emily Baird
Holy Week is one of the busiest weeks of the year in the Christian faith. It’s a time when Christians gather to celebrate the salvation, crucifixion, and resurrection of Christ.
Father Jordan Turano from St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Zanesville says it is a week full of emotions. He says Palm Sunday starts the week off, symbolizing how Christ was recognized as a king, but a few days later, this revelation turns to sadness after Christ is crucified on the cross.
“Even in his crucifixion, there was a sadness because we realized the pain and suffering he went through for us, but it’s also a joyful time because we, by him being put to death, we have new life, ” says Father Turano.
Father Turano says it is all part of God’s plan for saving us from ourselves, including Judas’ betrayal. Judas was one of Christ’s disciples and betrayed Christ for 30 pieces of silver.
“It shows the frailty of humanness where we can give in to Satan’s temptations for money, for power, for wealth, for recognitions, and we turn out back on that which is the most important, which is God, ” says Father Turano.
Holy Week will conclude this Sunday with the celebration of Easter.
