Dominican Nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery
July 19th, 2009 by Br. Peter Martyr Joseph Yungwirth, O.P.
On Sunday, Br. Paul Martin Kennedy, O.P., Br. Albert Duggan, O.P., and Br. Peter Martyr Joseph Yungwirth, O.P. visited the Dominican Nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery in the Bronx. This monastery is the oldest Dominican monastery in the US (the former monastery in Newark was the oldest, but it now houses the novitiate for the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal). Regarding the Dominican Nuns, the Constitutions of the Order of Preachers state:
“The nuns of the Order, according to the plan of St. Dominic, dedicate themselves totally in their contemplative religious life to communion with God, whereby the apostolic life of the brethren as well as of the other groups of the Dominican family is nourished while the nuns provide a witness of prayer, silence, and penance. The close spiritual communion of the nuns with the brethren is strengthened by a juridic bond by which the nuns are united with the Order in the manner prescribed in their own constitutions.” (LCO 142-143)
In other words, the Dominican nun’s life is a witness not only to the world, but also to the friars. Furthermore, their prayers support our ministry and aid us as we seek to proclaim the Word of God to the world. Also, something that makes American Dominican monasteries unique is that so many of them are (or were) perpetual adoration monasteries. As the nuns pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament, they beseech the Lord on behalf of the friars and the Church that the Truth of the Gospel might be spread throughout the world.
Please pray for our nuns and vocations to their monasteries.
